YMCA Expands 21st Century Community Learning Center Horizons Program
The YMCA of Western North Carolina today announces the expansion of its 21st Century Community Learning Center Horizons program, aimed at addressing the critical academic and enrichment needs of middle grade students in two Buncombe County school districts.
This free, grant-funded afterschool program is designed to support students’ academic success, particularly in reading and math. It also offers enrichment activities that foster social skills, leadership, and critical thinking. Serving grades 5-8 in the Enka and Erwin school districts, Horizons will be based at Enka Intermediate and Eblen Intermediate.
Horizons activities include STEM and literacy programs, arts education, and physical wellness. Partnerships with local organizations such as the Asheville Museum of Science and LEAF in Schools and Streets enhance the student experience.
“The YMCA’s 21st Century Horizons program has shown significant positive impacts on student engagement and academic performance,” said Melissa Wiedeman, vice president of operations for youth development. “By expanding services to additional schools, including Eblen Intermediate School, we aim to reach more students and provide them with the tools they need to succeed.”
With nearly 25 percent of middle and intermediate school students in the region living in poverty, the program plays a crucial role in providing free afterschool care and enrichment activities. This support is vital for families who face barriers such as transportation and work schedules.
"The Horizons program is a wonderful resource and opportunity for our middle grade students in the Enka and Erwin districts,” said Dr. Rob Jackson, superintendent of Buncombe County Schools. “Not only does the YMCA of Western North Carolina provide a safe afterschool environment, but our kids can explore their creative interests and also get help with homework assignments. This is an enriching and positive program that will continue to make a difference for our students.”
